Notes for Joseph Parrott:
Joseph Parrott may have
been the father of George Parrott who died in 1907 and whose body was
released to Henry Parrott, William Yarber and Thomas Clark, Jr. George
Parrott is buried in the Parrott cemetery, north of Rosiclaire, IL. The
dates on the stone are July 27, 1851 to August 11, 1907.
In the
cemetery, there is a grave for a Frankie Gibbs who died as a child. LDS
records indicate that Maranda Parrott was married on Nov. 9, 1873 to James
Gibbs. At the time of this writing, it is unknown if Frankie Gibbs is male
or female and it is unsure whether or not this is the child of James Gibbs
and Maranda Parrott. Maranda Parrott is also thought to have married an
Edward Williams and census records indicate that she had children after 1873
who were the children of Edward Williams.
No marriage is indicated on
the ILLINOIS marriage index between Maranda Parrott and James Gibbs.
It concerns this writer that LDS records may or not be accurate and that
they cloud the real truth when doing genealogy research.
Joseph
Parrott and John Kelley took out a marriage bond for Joseph Parrott to marry
Meddy Perry in 1834. John Kelly was from Darlington District, SC and had a
brothe named Wiley Kelley who married a Charlotte Parrott. Charlotte was the
daughter of Jacob Parrott and Penelope House. Charlotte had a brother named
Joseph Parrott, shown as born in 1786. It is not known if THIS Joseph is the
one who married Meddy Perry. The only connection is the Kelly or Kelley
connection since it is a long way from Darlington District SOUTH CAROLINA to
Franklin County, NC. Joseph (son of Jacob) married Martha Belcher. Could it
be that Meddy Perry was Joseph's 2nd wife? Indications are that Joseph (son
of Jacob) died in 1841 in South Carolina. If so then it could not be the
same JOSEPH PARROTT.
Notes for Meddy Perry:
(Meddy may have been a
nickname. I have tried searching for Armeda, Armida, Armita, Medina,
Medrina, Matilda, and all possibilities that I have thought of trying to
find out who Meddy Perry may have been. I have seen her name as Mida, Meddy,
Mattie and Meedie. I do not know what her real given name may have been. )
Marriage bonds were taken twice, once in January, 1834 and again in
August 1834. The only reason I can think of why Joseph Parrott would take
two marriage bonds out is that perhaps Meddy was not old enough to get
married in January, but was old enough in August. I have not been able to
find an actual marriage license to confirm that the two were married, but
census records show that the first five offspring were born in NC and the
sixth in Missouri. That leads me to believe that either Meddy or Joseph had
relatives in Missouri.
My grandfather, William Burl Yarber, told me
(and others) that his mother's mother (Meddy Perry) was full blooded
Chickasaw Indian. He may have been mistaken, or may have meant his father's
mother, since no record has been found to determine who Mary (wife of John
Yarbrough) was, or whether she was Native American.
I have searched
all through the Native American records data bases and have been unable to
prove that Meddy was Native American. But when the government is involved in
anything, it is prone to error.
Government involvement in the
determination of Native American Indian blood was flawed from the very
beginning. Issues of whether or not someone is, by birth, a member of one
heritage or another, should not be determined by any government.
There is convincing evidence that many Native Americans were not counted on
any of the "rolls" and that many non-natives were included.
History
shows us that many Native Americans denied their Indian heritage because
they did not want to be forced to leave their lands. The same history books
show that many white settlers claimed to be Native American in order to
receive money being doled out by the government to Native Americans.
One thing is clear. The Federal Government's involvement was flawed. It
appears in reading actual case histories that reporters used their own
judgment rather than fact when making determinations whether or not a
families were entitled to payment and classification as Native American.
In a letter to the government office responsible for inventorying the
Cherokee Nation, David Siler writes;
"Indeed these people are so
scattered since the breaking up of the Nation that I do not flatter myself
with the belief that with all the names I have taken their names have been
ascertained and reported in the course of four months, I think however that
very few indeed have been omitted if there are any."
The Siler census
is what the Chapman roll was based on. Guion- Miller used the Chapman Rolls
to include those Cherokees east of the Mississippi in the 1906 payment to
all the Cherokees.
David Siler was wrong. Even though he admitted
that it was an impossible task to inventory the Cherokees east of the
Mississippi in four months, he went on to say that he thought "very few
indeed have been omitted if there are any." That is colossal government
doublespeak.
Another quote from actual case history regards whether
or not a certain family should be admitted and shows that the report writer
used his own judgement, not fact, in making his decision:
"These families
of John Fields, Sarah Fields, Margaret Still, Mary Evans with the orphan boy
John Still could produce no facts to show their Indian blood. I came to the
conclusion that they were mixed with some other races. Afterwards, Dr. J. L.
Yarnell informed me that they are Cherokees. He gives no account of the
history of the family except Sarah Fields is the widow of George Fields and
that Mary Evans was the wife of George Still. Dr. Yarnell is highly
recommended."
How did Dr. J. L. Yarnell know that the Fields family
were indeed Cherokees? Another classic example of one man's opinion.
And other reporters used their own judgment to deny claims by families who
may have been legitimately entitled:
"William and John Smith live in
Jackson County, Alabama, they have the reputation where they live as being
Cherokees. I learned that they have been in the habit of denying their
Indian blood, they were raised in Marshall County, Alabama. I could obtain
no accurate account of their history. They tell me they don't know whether
they are Cherokee. John has the appearance of a half Indian."
This
writer does not feel that a "new" inventory would accomplish anything. Too
much time has lapsed and too many records have been lost. It would be nice
to know, however, if one's claim to be "one eighth" Indian is legitimate or
just family legend.

1870 Union County census has Amanda living with Tom Clark in Uniontown, KY.

probably adopted daughter. I do not know the relationship between the
Parrotts and the Hurfords.
Jesse Hurford is shown on the 1880 census in
the same household as being 28 years of age.

She was the daughter of Daniel and Lucinda Parrot. Her parents died when she
was very small leaving her and her sister, Mrs. Lula Annie Hurford (Julia
Ann Parrott). Her sister was about six years and she two years of age. She
was taken to Atlanta, GA. where she lived 'till she was about 18 years old.
Finding that she had a sister near Elizabethtown, she came to this place.
From here she moved to Brookport, IL. some three years ago where she was at
the time of her death. She wished to live to see her boys grown in which she
did. She was buried at Poke near Brookport, IL. (From the Hardin County
Independent, Hardin County, IL 17 July 1919)
